Sophomore QB Quinn Ewers accounted for four touchdowns and the defense tallied three turnovers in the victory.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 11/12 Texas Football opened the 2023 season with a 37-10 victory over Rice on Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers completed 19-of-30 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns, connecting with sophomore running back Jonathon Brooks, junior tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders and junior Adonai Mitchell for scores. Ewers also rushed for a score, equaling his career high with four touchdowns accounted for, previously accomplished against Oklahoma last season.
Defensively, Texas forced three turnovers, highlighted by the fifth career interception for senior linebacker Jaylan Ford, the seventh turnover he has forced in the last eight games. Sophomore defensive back Austin Jordan secured his first career interception and super senior linebacker Jett Bush scooped up his second career fumble recovery.
KEY STATISTICS
• The Owls got on the board first with a 43-yard field goal in the first quarter.
• Ewers connected with Brooks for a 37-yard touchdown to give Texas a 7-3 lead.
• Ford recorded his fifth career interception to become the fourth linebacker in program history to achieve the feat.
• A trio of Bert Auburn field goals pushed the lead to 16-3, including a 49-yarder as time expired in the first half.
• Mitchell made it a 23-7 game early in the third with his first career touchdown as a Longhorn. It marked the third-straight game in which he has scored, after collecting TDs for Georgia last season in the CFP semifinals and national championship.
• Sanders gave the Horns a 30-3 lead on a career-best 44-yard reception, catching the ball at the Rice 38 and sprinting for the score.
• Ewers tallied his second career rushing touchdown to give the Longhorns a 37-3 lead with 57 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
• The Owls closed out the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown pass with 3:04 remaining to make it 37-10.
