The 49ers finally pulled the plug on the Trey Lance experiment, trading him away to the Cowboys for a Day 3 draft pick, and Twitter had something to say about all of it.
Perhaps the San Francisco 49ers ultimately did right by trading away quarterback Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys, news of which was reported by ESPN on Friday night just before the Niners wrapped up their 2023 preseason campaign against the Los Angeles Chargers.
After all, Lance failed to beat out not only the team's presumed starter, Brock Purdy, but he lost out to San Francisco's other quarterback, Sam Darnold.
With his future in the Bay Area bleak at best, the 49ers elected to trade him away for proverbial "pennies on the dollar," reportedly receiving a fourth-round NFL Draft pick after spending three first-round picks and a third-rounder to move up and grab him at No. 3 overall in the 2021 draft.
That alone is going to mean the Niners lost this whole gambit big time. Fortunately, they're a Super Bowl contender, and Purdy also looks like the real deal, lessening the blow.
Regardless, Twitter isn't going to take too kindly to the news that San Francisco gave up on Lance, at least not without a lot of ridicule and criticism.
And some heartbreak, too.
As always, Twitter is a great place to check out reasonable discussion and arguments about any one thing in particular, including trades of high-profile players like Lance.
Let's see what some of the national peoples had to say.
Of course, some of the fan reactions are going to be quite provocative, too, including many that only wish Lance had received a fairer deal during his time with San Francisco.

Alas, it is what it is, right? Lance is gone, and the reactions are going to keep pouring in for days, weeks and even months.
Perhaps years, if that 2021 trade-up actually winds up being the worst trade in NFL history.
Right now, it's hard to argue anything else but.
