The four government primary school teachers who were arrested on Monday after they were summoned to the CBI court in Alipore allegedly paid at least Rs 5 lakh each to now expelled Trinamool Congress youth wing leader Kuntal Ghosh to secure jobs, the CBI claimed.

Several crores of rupees were taken from teaching job seekers in government primary schools by Kuntal and businessman Tapas Mondal, a close associate of jailed TMC MLA and West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE) former president Manik Bhattacharya, the central agency said.

While Kuntal took the money in person, Tapas would accept the money in person as well as Kuntal, it was alleged. The two have already been arrested in the recruitment scam case.

The arrested teachers, who are posted in Nabagram area of Murshidabad district and were sent to jail on Monday, were ineligible for the job, the agency said.

They have been identified as Sougat Mondal, Zahiruddin Sheikh, Saygar Hossain and Simar Hossain.

Their arrest is being seen as significant because as of now only political leaders, government officials and purported agents have been taken in custody in the alleged scam with no arrest of those who received the jobs illegally in exchange for bribes.

The CBI said Saigar paid Rs 6 lakh, Zahiruddin and Sougat Rs 5.5 lakh each and Simar Rs 5 lakh to Kuntal to secure jobs. Bribes were taken in return for jobs from scores of candidates from 2016 to 2022, it added.
