Why Notre Dame can cover

The Fighting Irish are looking to upgrade their offense from a year ago and will be led by graduate transfer Sam Hartman, who played the past five seasons at Wake Forest. Hartman is a dual-threat, having thrown for 110 touchdown passes and rushed for 17 in his career. He had his best statistical season in 2021, throwing for 4,228 yards and 39 touchdowns with just 14 interceptions, while rushing for 363 yards and 11 scores. In 2022, Hartman completed 270 of 428 passes (63.1%) for 3,701 yards and 38 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. He also carried 102 times for 129 yards and one TD.

One of the many returners on offense looking to take the next step is junior wide receiver Jayden Thomas. Thomas was one of the Fighting Irish's top receivers in 2022 with 25 receptions for 361 yards (14.4 average) and three touchdowns. He had a season-long 38-yard reception in the win over Navy in November. In that game, he caught three passes for 80 yards and one touchdown. See which team to pick here.

Why Navy can cover

The Midshipmen return a number of key players from last year's squad, including senior quarterback Tai Lavatai. This will be the third year in which he will see action for Navy. Last year, he completed 42 of 91 passes (46.2%) for 787 yards and five touchdowns. He was intercepted three times. He also carried 115 times for 309 yards (2.7 average) and five touchdowns. If he falters, waiting in the wings is sophomore Blake Horvath.

Also back is junior fullback Daba Fofana, the team's leading rusher. In 12 games a year ago, Fofana rushed 186 times for 769 yards (4.1 average) and six touchdowns. One of his best rushing games came against Notre Dame in November. In that contest, he carried 15 times for 133 yards (8.9 average) and one touchdown. He had a long run of 50 yards. See which team to pick here.
